German Stegmaier was born in Mühldorf/Inn, Germany in 1959. His studied at the University of Munich (mathematics/theory of science) 1977- 78 and at the Academy of Fine Art, Munich 1980-86. He lives and works in München.
Stegmaier is currently working on a project titled, Why would you work on a drawing for ten years? in collaboration with Hiroshima City University and Hiroshima Art Center, supported by Steiner Stiftung München. In April, 2017 he will have his first solo exhibitions in Japan: “eine Zeitlang”, Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo and “WWYWOADFTY”, Hiroshima Art Center. In addition, a major publication of his work will accompany his show at the Hiroshima Art Center.
