SEBASTIAN RUG – DRAWINGS IN THE VAULT AT GALLERY JOE

Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe is pleased to announce a solo show of drawings by Sebastian Rug. Drawings opens in the Vault Gallery on Saturday, January 15 and runs through February 19, 2011. Drawings runs concurrently with German Marks.

Drawings is Sebastian Rug’s first solo show at Gallery Joe. His drawings were first seen at the gallery in Line and Time and Space, a group show in the spring of 2008.

Rug will show a focused group of small graphite drawings. Each work is composed of minute marks and lines. Barely visible on the sheets are remnants of an underlying structure implying a composition developed over an extended period of time. As the marks accumulate the drawings appear to be constructed in an undefined space leaving the viewer to contemplate its function. Is this a building, a map, or an ancient artifact?

Sebastian Rug lives and works in Leipzig, Germany. He studied painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden and Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. Rug is represented in Germany by Emmanuel Post is Leipzig and Galerie Werner Klein in Köln. His work is included in the collections of Kulturstiftung des Freistaates of Sachsen, and Städel Museum, Frankfurt/Main.

Drawings opens in the Vault Gallery on Saturday, January 15 and runs through February 19, 2011. There is a reception on January15 from 3:00 – 5:30.
