Krishna, Love, and Sex
SABEEN RAJA – KRISHNA, LOVE, AND SEX AT GALLERY JOE
Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe is pleased to announce Krishna, Love, and Sex a show of paintings on paper by Sabeen Raja opening on Saturday, May 21, 2005. Krishna, Love, and Sex is on view in the Vault Gallery and will run through July 2, 2005.
Raja will be exhibiting six miniature (5”x5”) paintings on hand-made paper. Raja practices traditional techniques of Persian miniature painting; she refers to herself as a contemporary miniature painter. The juxtaposition of traditional Persian miniature painting with scenes addressing issues in western contemporary society creates a seductive and humorous imagery. The jewel-like paintings are reflections of Raja’s observations and innate humor, often resulting in absurd situations.
Sabeen Raja was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan. In 1999 she received her BA from the National College of the Arts in Lahore where she studied traditional miniature painting. Raja received her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2003. In 2003 Raja received The Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA grant award. Also in 2003 she was awarded a full fellowship at the Skowhegan School of painting and sculpture. Her work was seen last spring at Gallery Joe in the group show Figure Out. Raja is represented by Conner Contemporary Art in Washington, DC.
