Drawing from the Second Nature

WES MILLS – NEW DRAWINGS AT GALLERY JOE

Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe is pleased to announce a solo show of drawings by Wes Mills. drawings from the second nature opens in the Front Gallery on Saturday, March 15 and continues through April 19, 2003.

Mills works in a modest format; the average size of his drawings is only a few inches. drawings from the second nature is a new series of work completed within the past year. Two works in the show consist of sets of small drawings, 5 x 3 inches each, in simple hand made frames. “Mondrian’s Forest” is composed of thirty-three green pencil drawings. Another grouping, “second nature, ” is a set of six graphite drawings. Both sets are simply hung in grid formations. In addition to the above, there are eleven drawings of dense graphite on paper. As in his earlier works, Mills creates open and solitary spaces for the viewer with seemingly minimal intervention.

Wes Mills was born is Tucson, Arizona in 1960. After college he traveled, living in New York, Maine, and for several years, in Taos, NM. Currently, Mills lives and works in Missoula, Montana where he grew up.
