STEPHEN ROBIN – GROUND COVER AT GALLERY JOE
Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe is pleased to announce Ground Cover, a show of sculptural reliefs by Philadelphia sculptor Stephen Robin. Ground Cover, Robin’s third solo show at Gallery Joe opens on Friday, April 20. Ground Cover is in the front gallery along with Dark Drawings by Astrid Bowlby in the vault gallery. Both shows continue through May 26, 2001.
Botanical imagery has long been one of the constants in Stephen Robin’s artistic career. Beginning with his work in the restoration of architectural ornament, Robin has explored his fascination with flower and fruit imagery in cast concrete, aluminum, and iron.
In Ground Cover Robin will show five deep relief wall mounted sculptures cast in resin and painted with graphite paint. The sense of looking into dense richly layered foliage pervades these works. Robin will also show maquettes of several new public art projects, including the Trenton War memorial and the Center City PATCO stations, both projects in progress.
Best known for his public work, Robin has been awarded three federal commissions from the General Services Administration Art in Architecture program. His most recent project, Nebraska Grilles, installed in the spring of 2000, is for a Federal Courthouse in Omaha. Two twenty-one foot tall bronze grilles depicting sunflowers and goldenrod flank the stairway in the main entrance of the courthouse. Other GSA projects include Robin’s Federal Triangle Flowers in the Plaza of the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, Washington, DC (James Ingo Freed, Architect). A giant lily and rose rest in the plaza, each thirteen feet long and cast in aluminum. Robin received the GSA Citation Award for Sculpture for his project, juror, Robert A.M. Stern of Robert A. M. Stern Architects.
Ground Cover opens Friday, April 20, and runs through May 26, 2001. The artist will be present at an opening reception on Friday, April 20, from 5:30 - 7:30 P.M.
