Figure Out

FIGURE OUT

Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe will present Figure Out opening Friday, May 7 and running through Saturday, June 26, 2004. There will be an opening reception on First Friday, May 7 from 6:30 – 8:30 P.M.

In this show Gallery Joe examines the figure in drawing. Figure Out: drawing as narrative highlights seven artists from Philadelphia and points beyond. All of the artists in the show will be exhibiting at Gallery Joe for the first time.

Marilyn Holsing will show four new drawings. These mixed media works on paper suggest 18th Century French wallpapers with a little twist. They are romantic, bucolic scenes gone awry. Holsing lives and works in Philadelphia. She is a professor of art at Temple University, Tyler School of Art where she has worked since 1973. Her work is in numerous public and private collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Nils Karsten is a German-born artist, currently living and working in New York City. His graphite drawings explore themes of childhood fantasy and the latent potential for both good and evil. Karsten had his solo debut this spring in New York at the Marvelli Gallery in Chelsea. He received his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, and his MFA from the Vermont College of the Union Institute in Montpelier. Through May Karsten’s work can also be seen in Philadelphia in the project space at Voxpopuli.

Rob Matthews lives and works in Philadelphia. His graphite drawings reveal both a sardonic humor and a love of film noir. In Philadelphia his work has been shown at The Project Room, Spector Gallery, and most recently in “Works on Paper” at Arcadia University. This month Matthews will also have a solo show in the third floor gallery of the Philadelphia Art Alliance.

Sarah McEneaney’s work is well known in Philadelphia from her many exhibitions, including her highly acclaimed mid-career retrospective at the ICA. Among the works that McEneaney will show in “Figure Out” are several works on paper done during trips to Thailand and Sri Lanka. She lives and works in Philadelphia where she has studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of the Arts. Gallery Schlesinger represents McEneaney in New York.

Robyn O’Neil’s drawings are currently on view in the Whitney Biennial. Recent reviews have singled out O’Neil’s drawings for their quirky scenes involving tiny middle aged men cavorting in immense snowy landscapes. O’Neil was born Omaha, Nebraska. She lives and works in Houston, TX. She studied at University of Illinois in Chicago, and received her BFA in Fine Art from Texas A&M University in 2000. She also studied at Kings College, London, UK.

Sabeen Raja was born and raised in Lahore, Pakistan. In 1999 she received her BA from the National College of the Arts in Lahore where she studied traditional miniature painting. She will show two works on paper in the show using this techniques. Raja received her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 2003. She lives in Oklahoma and is represented by Conner Contemporary Art in Washington, DC.

Josephine Taylor lives and works in San Francisco. Her work is represented in the show by one very large drawing, 54 x 102 inches. Dream-like intertwined figures float in the center of a vast expanse of white paper. Taylor was awarded her BA in religious studies/Hindi-Sanskrit at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1998. In 2003 she received her MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute.
