Dark Drawings
ASTRID BOWLBY’S DARK DRAWINGS IN THE VAULT AT GALLERY JOE
Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe is pleased to present Dark Drawings, a solo exhibition by Astrid Bowlby, opening Friday, April 20. Gallery Joe will show Dark Drawings in the vault gallery along with Ground Cover by Stephen Robin is in the front gallery. Both shows continue through May 26, 2001.
Dark Drawings is Astrid Bowlby’s first solo show at Gallery Joe. A highly versatile artist, Bowlby is known in Philadelphia for both drawing and sculpture. Bowlby’s drawings vary in scale from large loose works, often incorporated in her installations, to very intricate intimate drawings. In this exhibition Bowlby focuses her efforts on her dark drawings. Very densely rendered, these works require months to complete. Of these drawings Bowlby states that she wishes to discover “how dark my drawings can be and still hold an image.” Earlier works from this series appeared at the Project Room in Philadelphia where tiny drawings were embedded in the walls creating a “Through-the-Looking-Glass” feeling (Ed Sozanski, The Inquirer,7.1.99). Bowlby will show ten new drawings ranging in size from 8 to 24 inches square.
Last year Bowlby received a fellowship for her “works on paper” from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. In 1999 she was awarded a Leeway Window of Opportunity Grant for the completion of her Fleisher Challenge Exhibition. Other recent exhibitions include Delaware Biennial, 2000 Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington, DE, Place of Memory: An Archaeology of Site-Specificity, 1969-1999 at Temple Gallery, and Keeper, a drawing installation at the Project Room, Philadelphia, PA.
Bowlby received her MFA in sculpture from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1996, and her BFA in both sculpture and drawing in 1994 from University of Southern Maine. In addition, she studied in New York for several years at Parsons School of Design and the Art Students League.
Dark Drawings opens Friday, April 20, and runs through May 26, 2001. The artist will be present at an opening reception on Friday, April 20, from 5:30- 7:30 P.M.
