LYNNE WOODS TURNER - DRAWINGS AT GALLERY JOE

Philadelphia, PA – Gallery Joe is pleased to announce the first solo show on the East Coast of drawing artist Lynne Woods Turner. Drawings opens on Friday, September 1 and runs through October 21, 2000. Ms. Turner received her BFA, ‘76 and MFA, ‘77 from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Since the late seventies she has lived and worked in Portland, Oregon.

Turner’s forms are deceptively simple. Two circles take shape by the accretion of lines laid down with exquisite control. Circles form into rosettes suggesting molecular or perhaps mystical diagrams. She has observed the following about her work:

I try to work toward an integration in the work that is absolutely not about ‘self’ expression. I am more interested in a sublimation of self into the physics of the form, the process and the material. Although the work has changed a great deal through the years, a number of things have always held my attention: proportional relationships, shifting focus or perception, and the play of positive and negative; the use of openings or connections, double or paired shapes, and parallel or concentric lines; and working with delicate or demanding materials and processes. I spend a lot of time trying to pull together the minimal and the sensual, the geometric and the organic.

Turner works on translucent paper often drawing on both sides. With pencil and gouache she creates undulating fields and biological conglomerations which act as universal foundations and elemental building blocks. Gallery Joe first showed Ms. Turner’s drawings in a group show this past February, Introducing: Drawings by four artists. Other recent exhibitions include The Great Drawing Show 1550 – 1999 at Kohn Turner Gallery in Los Angles, Zen Spirit: The Invisible Tread at Karen McCready Gallery and Summer Selections 1996 at The Drawing Center in New York.

Turner’s drawings are included in the following public collections: Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, Bank of America World Headquarters Galleries, San Francisco, CA, Yale University Museum, New Haven, CT, Seattle, WA, University of Iowa Art Museum, Iowa City, IW.

Drawings opens First, Friday, September 1 and runs through October 21, 2000. The artist will be present at a reception on Friday, September 1, from 6:30 - 8:30 P.M.
